POLICE accident investigators are continuing inquiries into the death of an 82-year-old pensioner who suffered fatal injuries in a road accident in Whitefield.

An inquest has been opened by Bury District Coroner Mr Barrie Williams into the death of retired aeroplane fitter Mr Ernest Parker, of Nipper Lane, Whitefield, who was crossing nearby Dales Lane on Saturday, December 9 when he was in collision with a Ford Escort.

The widower suffered severe head injuries and died four hours later in Bury General Hospital.

Evidence of identification was given by Mr Parker's daughter Mrs Susan Kernaghan, of Highmeadow, Outwood, Radcliffe.

Constable Pat Richardson, of the Bury Traffic Unit, attended at the scene of the accident early on the Saturday afternoon. He reported that the pensioner had been in a collision with a Ford Escort saloon and survived for only four hours before dying in hospital.

Coroner's officer Mr Geoff Cave said a full investigation was continuing and the help of witnesses was still being sought.
