BURY has received a welcomed festive fillip with the news the town is set to extend its position as one of the region's major shopping destinations.

The massive boost comes courtesy of the publication of a new report, "Town Centres 2000," from international property advisers GVA Grimley in conjunction with the Association of Town Centre Management.

This report examines Bury from the viewpoint of retailers and property investors and finds that variety of stores and the work of the town centre management scheme are major attributes in helping to attract further retailers to Bury town centre.

Chris Renshaw of GVA Grimley's retail department in Manchester said: "The rolling redevelopment of the Mill Gate centre has provided a covered and modern retail environment at the heart of the town. "In addition, the town has remained buoyant in the face of the growth of out-of-town shopping and the attractions of Manchester city centre."

This has been achieved, he stresses, due to Bury's "strong and broad cross section of retailers in the centre and its ease of access by public transport and car."

Mr Renshaw added: "The fact that the town remains unaffected by the growth in 'out-of-town' shopping in the area is an indication of its strength.

"Record rents of more than £100 per square foot now being achieved for any retail units that become available as retailers battle for space.

"This has helped to create a vibrant shopping environment and an example of a town where retailers are prepared to invest."

He went on: "The town centre management team plays an important role in helping attract new retailers into the town.

"It provides retailers with information about issues such as rents, landlords, current planning policy and helps to identify possible suitable properties in the town.

"Information like that, readily available," he went on, "can help influence retailers' decisions.

"Bury is recognised as having one of the most pro-active town centre management schemes in the region so the town should have no problem in attracting more retailers."

Town Centre co-ordinator Trish Willott commented: "Town Centres 2000 is extremely encouraging for Bury.

"The proposals to redevelop the former market hall and adjacent properties to hopefully extend the shopping area even further should, as the report indicates, help to ensure a brighter future for the town."
