ANDY Payton insisted he's not leaving Turf Moor after celebrating the 400th League start of his prolific career with Burnley's winner over Barnsley.

The Clarets' leading scorer was recently linked with moves to Wigan and Nott County.

But Payton shrugged off the speculation to stress that he has no desire to leave Burnley, where he has set his sights on scoring a century of goals for the club.

He said: "I've just signed a three-year deal so it doesn't bother me at all. It's just crazy rumours.

"It doesn't unsettle me at all because there's no truth it. I don't know where the stories come from, but it's never a decent club is it ?

"I certainly wouldn't be stepping down a division, not when I've just signed a three-year contract and obviously I don't want to leave Burnley.

"I think there are only nine players in the history of the club who have scored 100 goals for them so I want to do that, being a local lad.

"I've got 13 so far this season and I think I've only had about 15 or 16 starts so I've got to be happy with that.

"But I want 100 goals for Burnley. I've been here three years and got 75 so I'm not doing too bad."

The Clarets got their season firmly back on track with Saturday's 2-1 win, their first in seven League games, which lifted them a place to ninth and stopped a run of three home Division One defeats.

They needed some impressive goalkeeping from Nik Michopoulos to do it but also looked more potent themselves with Payton and Ian Moore combining well.

"Mooro's got electric pace and causes all sorts of problems and then when Branchy went up front as well he has pace and is good in the air so we looked a bit more dangerous.

"Wins breed confidence and although it wasn't that convincing I think we can get back on a roll again," Payton added.

Manager Stan Ternent will remain on the look-out for a new striker but took his hat off to Payton and his partnership with Moore.

"That's what Payts does. It's an incredible record. Congratulations are in order for him," said Ternent.

"They are two very good players, quick players and two players who will score goals.

"Mooro was unlucky with a header that hit the inside of the post and came along the line and he gave a good performance as well. They will give any side problems."

Burnley were set on their way by another headed goal from Lennie Johnrose, who made it two in two games at Turf Moor with a welcome strike from the midfield department.

"He got me a lot of goals at Bury and I thought he had a fantastic match," said Ternent.

And although Steve Hayward's debut goal meant a nervy finish for Burnley they hung on to register a vital victory ahead of tomorrow night's FA Cup third-round replay at Scunthorpe.

The manager added: "It will give the players confidence. In any walk of life if you are confident and know what you're doing it helps.

"It's a start. We got a point last week and we've won this week so we go into the Cup tomorrow in good heart. We've taken four points from the last six, we've got 42 points in total and we're in the top 10, so it's all credit to the players."
