RESIDENTS in the Cornholme area of Todmorden are angry that a site left like a tip by a group of travellers has still not been tidied up.

The caravan dwellings moved on from the Burnley Road site after being served with a court order.

They had camped on the site after being moved on from Ratten Clough by Burnley Council and are now believed to be in the greater Manchester area. Local residents are angry that the car park area of the former Railway Hotel has been left in a mess.

A spokesman for Calderdale Council said they had received an assurance from the owners of the land that the site would be tidied up.

After being approached by residents the council had taken action and the caravan dwellers had since left.

He said the landowners had been asked to get the site tidied up and to make it as secure as possible to prevent any similar incidents in the future.

Local councillor Clarence Brown said he was horrified at the mess the travellers had left behind.

He said: "They should not be allowed to get away with it.

"Councils should have the power to take money off them when their behaviour results in money having to be spent to clean up after them. I think if they were made to pay for the damage they cause and the litter they leave behind they would be more careful."

Fred Howarth of Howarth Removals of Jumps Road just behind the empty pub site said:" It is a mess. I am pleased to hear that the site owners have agreed to tidy up the site but at the moment it is still an eyesore with debris, including a wrecked vehicle."
