IT WAS hardly the weather to "get on yer bike" but a display of cycling memorabilia still proved a draw for visitors to Groundwork Rossendale's countryside centre.

The exhibition, was organised by cycling enthusiast Anthony Curtis, of Peel Street, Haslingden. There was a steady stream of visitors despite the snow.

The event centred on bikes made by Johnny Kay, well known figure in local cycling circles.

Mr Kay set up his own bike shop in Bank Street, Rawtenstall in 1930, selling bikes he made himself.

"They were really good quality," explained Mr Curtis. "He was a specialist bike maker. People could have bikes tailor-made almost even down to the type of wheels."

The bikes were ridden in professional time trials and hill climbs, and by dedicated touring cyclists.

Mr Kay retired in the late 1950s and handed the business over to his son, Gerald. He continued until the business was bought by Eric Wilson in the 1970s, who traded under his own name.

Mr Curtis is keen to hear from anyone who has historic bicycling items, particularly any connected to Johnny Kay. You can contact Mr Curtis on 01706 831816.
