A MAN went on a shoplifting train trip to Clitheroe because he was too well-known by shop security staff in Blackburn, a court was told.

Blackburn magistrates heard that James Anthony Ford and an accomplice planned to hide their booty in the grounds of the castle and collect it before completing the return journey.

Ford, 36, of Cherry Tree guest house, Islington, pleaded guilty to stealing a set of drill bits from Dawsons of Clitheroe and two sets of paint brushes from SW Allens. He also pleaded guilty to theft of a clock from the Blackburn Rovers shop on a previous occasion.

After reading pre sentence reports the magistrates put Ford on probation for 12 months and ordered him to pay £65 costs.

Basharat Ditta, defending, said Ford had a long standing drug problem which he had been fighting hard.

"Everything had been going well for him but there was a hiccup and these offences are the result," said Mr Ditta.
