THERE can't be many people in Britain who can afford to write off £1million in bad debts.

In Blackburn we have a few such people -- and we call them councillors.

The lost money, I hasten to point out, is not their own -- it is council tax payers' money which they have been entrusted to collect and manage for us.

To add insult to injury, the Executive Member for Resources tells us that this loss is quite acceptable and reflects great credit on the council because it is only one per cent of total income.

Could I draw the lady's attention to the numerous other occasions that large sums of money have been written off in the recent past?

Could I respectfully ask the leader of the council if he would publish the total amount of money written off over the last 10 years?

H HODGKINSON (Mr), Nares Road, Blackburn.
