WHALES and dolphins in British waters must be given greater protection, says Bury North MP David Chaytor.

He says they are under increasing threat from pollution and fishing nets.

The Labour backbencher has signed up to a campaign by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.

Mr Chaytor says sewage must be fully treated, fisheries strictly monitored with harsh penalties for offences and beach and boat users urged to take their rubbish home. He has also called for more conservation areas.
