REGARDING Jack Straw's promise to get tough on illegal asylum seekers (LET, February 6), could he explain why, when 12 months ago he took personal charge of the case of the Afghan hi-jackers and promised the swift response of deportation, about 98 of them are still here at the taxpayers' expense?

I don't think the illegals will be quaking in their shoes if it's up to Jack to stop them. At his speed, it will be in the next 20 to 50 years that we will have some legislation.
