CALLING all Summerseat residents. Have you heard of Brox's Brow and know its history?

If the answer is yes, you could be in a position to help artist Clare Negus who is creating another piece for the Irwell Sculpture Trail.

The Prestwich-based "interactive explorer" is interested in the pathways known as Desire Lines that criss-cross the common ground between Brooksbottom and Nuttall known as Brox's Brow.

Clare wants to know the reasons they exist, and is in the area this week to discuss her ideas and look at any photographs of the land people might have.

She plans to hold a "Creation Event" over two days on March 24 and 25, when residents are invited to help her make a Desire Line as a temporary artwork on the sculpture trail. She wants to encourage trail users to stray from their designated route and explore the surrounding area and beauty spots with the help of locals who know the area's best-kept secrets.

"A marked trail is a very effective way of controlling a person's experience of a place," said Clare. "This is an experiment in collaboration with local people and the public using the trail who will become my subject matter."

Clare says her project will address the control of public movement through the environment. She will compare the sculpture trail, a public right of way, with desire lines which have no legal status, and adds: "This challenges the conventional role of the viewer, the artist and the artwork."

Clare is one of five newly-graduated North West artists who are preparing temporary artworks for the sculpture trail. They will be unveiled on April 13 and exhibited until September. Clare can be contacted on 07940 558412 or via the IST projects officer on 253 5892.
