TYLDESLEY'S champion indoor rower, Herbert Leah, is all set to go for gold at the World Championships in Boston, USA, at the end of the month.

Herbert, 72, a member of the PPP healthcare Great Britain team, will be aiming to maintain his winning streak. He took gold in the men's 70+ category at the British Championships in November.

The pensioner earned his place in the British team following his stunning row in November when he clocked seven minutes 25.5 secs over 2000 metres on the Concept 2 Indoor Rower. He competed in the World Championships last year, winning gold in the men's 70-79 lightweight event.

Herbert, a former member of the Army Physical Training Corps, began rowing 11 years ago as part of a physiotherapy programme following a hip replacement.

He has triumphed four times at the British Championships and in 1998 smashed the previous world indoor rowing record in the lightweight men's 70+ category by 15 seconds. At the 2000 World Championships he was the best overall over 50 performer.
