LAST week's 1-0 defeat at potential champions Squires Gate shows just how far the young Daisy Hill side has come in a short space of time.

Assistant manager Brian Smith says: "Even though we lost to Squires Gate the feedback that we got from everyone was extremely positive.

"This was a game we could easily have won with a little luck. We have an average age of just 20 and everyone of our players has improved and developed as the season has progressed.

"We realise that results with so many youngsters will be up and down, but our main priority is the development of our players. "All our players pay subs every week so we are competing against a lot of clubs in the division who pay wages or expenses. If we were on a level playing field with the rest we would be pushing for a promotion place.

"What we have created at Daisy Hill is a great atmosphere and team spirit where every player looks forward to training and match days. We have developed the winning habit where players now go out expecting to win."

Smith adds: "Our training regime is tough with a 'no train, no play' rule. We feel our fitness levels are up with the best in amateur football. Our training involves a lot of ball work and drills combined with the physical work, which can only benefit the players on a Saturday."

Gary Crompton, the club's new signing from Chorley, had an excellent debut against Squires Gate and will be a big asset. The 21-year-old has been impressed by Daisy Hill's set-up and turned down the chance to sign for two or three Division One teams in favour of Hill.

Tomorrow's Cup replay against Atherton LR should be a cracker with Daisy Hill looking to make their mark in a knockout competition.
