A FOUR-YEAR fight by skateboarders, BMX bikers and in-line skaters in Radcliffe has finally paid off.

The way is now clear for a town centre skate park after planners gave full planning permission.

"It's brilliant news and we are delighted," said Mr Chris Kelman, a founder member of Radcliffe Association of Dedicated Skaters (RADS).

RADS has campaigned for the leisure facility since its inception. Youngsters were fed-up at having nowhere to skate or ride and were accused of causing a nuisance when they practised on the streets.

Land between Hutchinson Way and Sion Street has been earmarked for the skatepark. It was chosen because it was central enough to be convenient, yet far enough away from houses to avoid creating a disturbance.

Mr Kelman said: "The total cost will be around £100,000. We have already raised £46,000 through bidding for awards and grants and this will continue."

He added: "Work could begin even before we raise the final total because part of the project involves landscaping work."
