THE secret of a long lasting marriage is a highly complicated mix of factors -- but Jim and Edith Almond could give a few pointers.

For the couple from Radford Street in Darwen are celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary.

Jim, 73 and Edith 70, grew up on Radford Street but became separated when Jim was called up for National Service.

He enjoyed his time so much he re-enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps and worked as a nurse in field hospitals.

Jim said: "A while after I came back from the field, Edith's sister asked if I would make up a foursome with her, her husband and Edith.

"Six weeks later we were engaged and got married at Blackburn Register Office."

Jim and Edith said they were having a small celebration with family, including their grandson, Matthew, who is 17 on the same day.

Also at the party will be their daughters, Sandra and Valerie and their son, Philip.

And the secret of a long and happy marriage? "Treat your partner with respect," said Jim.

"My wife is a gem, and sometimes I don't realise it he added.
