WELL-known St John Ambulance volunteer Mrs Phyllis Lund has died aged 76.

Mrs Lund was known to thousands of volunteers in East Lancashire through her work as an instructor in Blackburn which she did for many years with husband Derick.

She was especially well-known at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School where she taught first aid with Derick.

Mrs Lund had worked for St John Ambulance since 1956 and was promoted to Serving Sister in 1980 and Officer Sister in 1988.

She qualified as a state registered nurse in 1964 and worked on many wards at Blackburn Royal Infirmary, rising to the rank of Nursing Sister before she retired in 1984.

She was born in Halifax in 1925 where she met and married Derick while he was serving with the RAF during the war.

The couple moved to Blackburn after the war and lived on Brentfell Road in Revidge.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the new airport in Hong Kong four years ago.

Mrs Lund's funeral will be held at Blackburn Cathedral today at 2.30pm.
