REGARDING the remarks of Mr Tom Ansbro (Letters, March 2), about what to have engraved on a stone plaque describing the artistic sculptures we are likely to see on Church Street in Blackburn in the near future, perhaps my suggestions may help.

Firstly, I suggest the councillors involved in the selection of these objets d'art take a trip to Fleetwood and see the statue placed on top of the roundabout on the A585 and note the splendid replica statue of Eros presented to the port's citizens by the management of Fisherman's Friend.

It gleams golden in the sun and I am sure brightens the day of all the passing motorists, which is more than can be said of the tin trees and oversize bees we must look at daily in Blackburn.

Perhaps a replica of the Trevi Fountain in Rome could replace those hideous buildings which obscure perhaps one of the few buildings of any merit in this town, the Cathedral.

This, however, might fall foul of the environmental officials involved in the recent trauma with that poor lady's monkey and require round-the-clock lifeguards to prevent drunks falling in the fountain and drowning while recovering coins.

Slightly less ambitious could be a replica of the Little Mermaid which graces the harbour at Copenhagen.

A further suggestion is a copy of the statue of the Mannequin Pis. This is only small and cast in bronze and is a great point of interest for visitors to Brussels and I am sure would cause much pleasure to the tax payers of Blackburn if placed in front of the town hall. After all, we have been having it taken out of us for years.

I believe the people of Brussels keep the little boy's statue clothed at no expense to the city, and I am sure we could prevail on Graeme Soueness or Rovers' sponsors to keep him suitably attired in the latest kit.

MR JAMES SAUL, Deganwy Avenue, Blackburn.
