Leigh East 50 Heworth 12 LEIGH East's dream of promotion to the Conference Premier Divison moved another step closer to reality as they rattled up half a century of points against the visitors from York.

The win took East to a hat-trick of victories over Heworth - already beaten once in the league and in the National Cup - but when the home side fell eight points behind in as many minutes, it looked like the tables would be turned.

But East quickly settled to play their best rugby for a number of weeks, using their strengths and asserting their authority with a 10-try blitz.

Darren Hall was back to his magnificent best, scoring a hat-trick - one a stunning 80-yarder - to waltz off with the man of the match award.

Centre Lee Penkywicz showed good pace to get his two and Mick Redford, back to his best form, scored another long range effort. There were other touchdowns from Tim Fletcher, Paul Hayes, Mark Kay and Tony Sanderson. Tony Gredecki kicked three goals and John Gunning two.

At one stage it looked as if East were again going to make hard work of poor opponents when an easy penalty and converted try from Heworth's man of the match Jason Gatus gave the visitors an 8-0 lead.

East had not constructed any form of attack at this stage but once they did Heworth were outclassed in every department.

The second team virtually booked their promotion place into Division Four with a 44-8 hammering of last season's champions Pilikngton Recs.

East controlled the game from start to finish and worked some clever moves which had the St Helens side reeling.

Gareth Reynolds, and Chris Penkywicz scored two tries apiece with one each from Alex Partington, Paul Braterski and Gary Hopkins. Austin Monks landed six goals.
