LEIGH Centurions are set to challenge former top-flight rugby union neighbours Orrell to a dual cross-code battle.

Leigh are considering a proposal to stage a double billing of league and union games with Orrell in August, rekindling memories of the ground-breaking clashes between Wigan and Bath in 1996.

Officials of both clubs meet at Edge Hall Road tomorrow to complete the formalities when it is expected the two clubs will be 'twinned.'

Leigh's head coach Paul Terzis says: "We see it as another positive move for us. The Orrell club wants to attain it's former top flight status and if we can help them along the way, we will.

"Of course it's a two-way street where we can exchange marketing, development and coaching expertise. It can only be of benefit to both parties.

"We are looking at arranging two cross-code games, probably in August. The idea is for us to play union at Orrell's ground and for them to play league at Hilton Park."

The games would need approval of both the RFL and RFU before they could take place.

The Centurions, who knocked Super League club Salford out of the Challenge Cup last month and have won all 12 matches to set the pace in the Northern Ford Premiership, are among the most progressive clubs.

They have already established links with leading French side Villeneuve Leopards and London-based amateurs St Albans.
