WORRIED residents living near to a traffic blackspot were celebrating today after council bosses agreed to implement traffic calming measures.

But for one of the people involved in one of the most recent crashes -- where a bus ploughed through a building before crashing into a house -- it appears to be too little too late.

Lancashire County Council has agreed to spend £6,000 putting down new anti-skid surfacing at the junction of Stanhill Road and Haslingden Old Road, Knuzden.

The roadworks follow a campaign by residents to get improvements to the junction following the bus crash last year, when a Stagecoach bus carrying six passengers ploughed through newly- erected steel railings and demolished the two outhouses before stopping against a row of houses after turning off Stanhill Road onto Haslingden Old Road. Although there was no suggestion the bus had been speeding, residents claimed accidents were a regular occurrence on the street and action had to be taken.

Resident Jean Hannon, 61, had just left one of the outhouses -- which is used as a rubbish store -- moments before the accident.

Her husband, Terry, said today: "We are pleased action is being taken to slow the road down, it has been an accident waiting to happen.

"The road does need slowing down. My wife has been seriously traumatised by what has happened. She doesn't like going out and won't go anywhere near the building which was hit."

County Coun Dorothy Westell, who led the residents' campaign, said: "This is excellent news for local people. I am delighted the county council has responded so well so that the residents' demands have been satisfied."

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "We are aiming to have the work finished by the end of the month."
