PARIS has the Rive Gauche, Alexandria has its famous Corniche and Radcliffe has its . . .?

So far a new riverside park in the town centre remains nameless, but that's where you come in.

Radcliffe folk are being asked to come up with suggestions before the park's scheduled completion date in May.

With the eyesore former One Stop shop now demolished and its old cellars filled and allowed to settle, a full environmental improvement programme, under the auspices of Radcliffe Renewal, is now well under way.

A £180,000 North West Development Agency derelict land reclamation grant is being used for the latest phase of the work. When completed, Radcliffe will have its own continuous riverside walk from Stand Lane through to Pilkington Way. Complementing that, on the former One Stop site, will be a grassed terrace stepping down towards the river, mixed tree and shrub planting, a paved area with seating and a line of eye-catching plane trees fronting onto Stand Lane. At the same time car parking for 23 vehicles, to supplement the provision at Radcliffe Library, is also to be created.

Coun Barry Briggs, the chairman of Radcliffe Area Board said: "This is brand new public space for Radcliffe and we feel it will help to further enhance the town centre area and increase its attractiveness. What we want now are some suggestions from local people as to just what the park should be called. We are offering a small cash prize for the eventual winner, but the main reward must surely be in helping to come up with a name which will be very much part of the town for many years to come."

Entries are now being accepted and should be handed in, complete with name and address, at either Radcliffe Library, the Asda store or Frydays in Blackburn Street.
