BURY'S revamped refuse collection service swings into action next week.

As part of a series of sweeping changes in the service, bins will be collected from Tuesday to Friday only, starting from the week of April 2.

It will bring the curtain down on the Bank Holiday Monday bin blues suffered by householders whose collection day fell on a Monday, and were left hoarding rubbish for an extra week.

Next week also signals the start of a free and pre-bookable collection service for bulky domestic waste.

It is being introduced by the council to counter flytipping and allows up to six outsized items to be collected at any one time.

The scheme will replace the limited and chargeable service provided through Operation Springclean for the removal of larger items. The latest changes come in addition to the recently-launched kerbside waste paper collection from people's homes.

Bury Council's environment chairman, Councillor Wayne Campbell, said: "We have been taking a long hard look at our refuse collection service and believe these changes, together with other internal improvements to the way the system works, will bring real advantages for local people.

"Households where the day of collection is to be changed should by now have been notified by means of an adhesive label placed on their wheelie bin.

"New calendars in relation to the waste paper collection have also been

distributed to every home in the borough."

He said a a leaflet detailing all aspects of the service is being distributed to every household. It also confirms that excess refuse, items which do not fit into the bin, will not be collected, and should be placed back inside the wheelie bin for collection the following week.

Anyone who has not received the leaflet or would like to find out how to book the bulky waste collection service, should call 253 5353.
