MEDICAL group Smith & Nephew, which employs more than 400 people manufacturing gauze at its Brierfield site, is ahead of its financial targets, according to chairman Dudley Eustace.

At the company's AGM, he told shareholders that the company's prospects for growth remained excellent, with all four business operations performing well.

"Our markets remain strong, driven by the growing needs of ageing populations worldwide," he said.

"Just over two years ago, we announced a plan to transform Smith & Nephew into a group focused on the long-term growth markets of medical devices.

"I am pleased to report that the transformation has been achieved ahead of schedule and we are more than meeting our financial targets."
