A "PEACEMAKING" nightclubber suffered multiple head injuries after he was allegedly attacked by a former workmate, a jury heard.

Burnley Crown Court heard how David Barnes received a total of five fractures -- including one to his skull and two to his eye, after James Halsall, 29, was said to have put the boot in as he lay on the ground near The Royal Hotel, Waterfoot.

Mr Barnes, who was left in the street, unconscious and covered in blood, was in hospital for nine days while his "catalogue" of broken bones were treated.

Halsall, of Woodlea Road, Waterfoot, denies inflicting grievous bodily harm, in June last year.

Alan Wolstenholme, prosecuting, said Mr Barnes had been to a nightclub attached to the Royal Hotel and bumped into the defendant, who he had worked with in the past.

Words were exchanged and Halsall threatened the complainant.

Mr Barnes left the club in the early hours with his friends, saw Halsall squaring up to his friend Gordon Smith.

Mr Barnes went to intervene to get the defendant off his friend and then, the Crown alleged, Halsall attacked Mr Barnes.

He punched him in the head, pulled him to the ground by his hair and kicked him. (Proceeding)
