TOURISM minister and MP for Rossendale and Darwen Janet Anderson, visited Helmshore textile museum as part of the Government's campaign to get across the message that the countryside is not closed because of the foot and mouth disease.

Mrs Anderson visited a kissing gate at a footpath outside the museum and to show that many walks away from livestock farms are still open.

She of the museum.

Principal keeper Ian Gibson, said the only way the museum had been directly affected by the crisis was by people who could not attend National Trust properties ringing to ask if the museum was open.

Ironically, the museum had to open specially for the Minister's visit as it is normally closed on a Saturday.

The only Saturday of the year when it is open to visitors is at Easter. Helmshore textile museum and Queen Street mill museum at Harle Syke, Burnley, will both open each day at Easter, Helmshore from 2-5pm and Queen Street from 12.30-5pm.

There was a large number of visitors at Helmshore yesterday for a rally of pre-war Morgan cars.
