IBOW to Cade Foster's superior wisdom and knowledge of seismology (Letters, April 3) and confess to knowing more about maggot-breeding than earthquakes.

But, having seen how Hiroshima and Nagasaki were each wiped off the map by a single atomic bomb, I am still concerned at what 14 atomic explosions of over 50 times the power of those single weapons, exploded underground over a period of weeks, might cause in an area already liable to earth tremors.

No matter what arguments are put forward, if this was repeated by childish governments out to prove that might and strength conquers, I remain uneasy that this cannot but have an effect on Nature.

FRANCIS CROSS (Mr), Royal Street, Accrington.
