MUSICAL maestros from Stonyhurst College and its preparatory school, St Mary's Hall, added another string to their bow recently by performing a concert in St John Smith's Square, in London.

The group of 150 musicians and choristers travelled down to the capital and teamed up with St John's Beaumont, its other preparatory school for Stonyhurst College which is very near Windsor.

All three schools proved their instrumental and vocal expertise by performing extracts from Vivaldi's 'Gloria' and Handel's organ concerto, as well as the first performance of Robin Highcock's sinfonia No2 for full orchestra written especially for the occasion.

"The event attracted a large audience who were full of praise for the ambitious and varied programme which demonstrated the high musical standards of all three schools," said head of music at St Mary's Hall Vincent Conyngham.

And he added: "The schools of the Stonyhurst foundation have a long tradition of success on the sporting field. It is good that the performing arts are redressing the balance by making its musical prowess more widely known."
