A FIVE foot frog will appear on the banks of the River Irwell at a picnic area behind the Rose 'n' Bowl in Newchurch Road.

Stacksteads Riverside Park Group has been granted £15,000 from the Mersey Basin Trust to pay for environmental works along the river bank including repairing the river wall, new footpaths, picnic tables and benches.

The frog has been sculpted by local artist Jimmy Starr, who runs an off-licence in Britannia. He has made several stone animal sculptures some of which are now on show at Knowsley Safari Park.

Chairman of the Riverside Park Group Coun Michael McShea said: "Jimmy kindly donated the sculpture to us some time ago.

Now we have received this funding we are able to go-ahead and put the 'frog' in place.

"It will complement the sculpture on the other side of the river -- the amphitheatre style 'coming full circle' , which is part of the Irwell Valley Sculpture Trail.

"I would like to thank Jimmy for his valuable donation and also to thank the Mersey Basin Trust for their generosity to us over the years."
