Hyndburn and District Boys League 2 Bury and Radcliffe 0

HYNDBURN lifted the LFA Inter League trophy thanks to a disciplined display that was more hard graft than sublime skill.

In a game starved of flair and any real goalmouth action, it was good, honest hard work that won the cup for Hyndburn.

John Nutter and Shaun Davies got the all important goals but it was Hyndburn's ability to perform as a solid, well organised unit that was the key.

The back four were impeccable, midfield worked hard to close down the opposition while Garvey and strike partner John Nutter were ready to chase each and every ball over the top.

Bury and Radcliffe were equally as well organised but found it hard to breach Hyndburn's back line.

Winger Chris Ridgeway came closest to opening the scoring but his well struck volley was straight at Hyndburn keeper Jordan Malley, while the same player flashed a header just wide.

Hyndburn too were reduced to half chances and the impressive Davies curled a free kick just over the bar before Nutter lost his footing just as he burst into the area.

Nutter then turned provided when he cut the ball back across the area but Ken Flint was in to deny Garvey a clear sight of goal.

Just before the break Davies forced William Stephenson into a save after a mistake from full-back Marc Tierney.

Bury were less of a threat in the second half as Hyndburn began to stamp their authority on the game -- and were more willing to get forward in numbers.

That was underlined when Jason Ashworth found Garvey on the right hand side of the box and his first time shot was too hot for Stephenson and the keeper turned the ball behind for a corner.

The breakthrough finally happened after a Bury defender misjudged Darren Houghton's floated free kick and Nutter was on to the ball in a flash to cooly slot the ball home.

It was a goal Hyndburn thoroughly deserved and they had a two-goal cushion soon after and it was all down to a magnificent run from Garvey.

The speedy striker picked the ball up deep in his own half and breezed past two defenders before being up-ended in the box. Davies rounded off his own fine performance when he stepped up to slot the ball home.
