ROSE Hill Junior School completed a cross country double after winning both the boys and girls championships at Towneley Park.

The girls team, led by Lancashire runner Jade Hartley, retained their team award while a fine all-round performance saw the boys take the title of Coal Clough.

Their were also team awards for the district's smaller schools with Burnley Wood winning the girls prize and Cliviger the boys team.

Held over two days, the girls were first to be crowned champions again where Jade Hartley, a member of Pendle Athletic's Club, was first home and team-mate Jayde Howson finishing in third place.

It was more of a team effort for the boys the following day with only Stephen Howson managing to finish in the top 10.

Each team consisted of 10 runners with the top eight to count.

Despite the terrible weather, the long-established event still attracted a large turn out with 145 girls and 171 boys taking to the rain drench Towneley Park.

Lauren Nightingale of Christ the King managed to break up the Rose Hill domination in the girls event which she raced home in second place.

Emma Hornsby of Casterton did well to finish in fourth place and there was also a good performance from Worsthorne's Alex Mills who finished just behind.

Jessica Gee of Coal Clough was sixth with Tiffany Boswell of Padiham Green in seventh place.

Rebecca Hayton of St John's was eight while Nicola Wilding was the third Rose Hill runner to finish in the top tenth when she finished in ninth place.

Rachel Yates was the top performer for Worthorne to finish in 10th place and help her school to second place in the team competition.

Heasandford were third. In the small school team event, Cliviger were second and St Joseph's were third.

In the boys event, Christ the King and Heasandford took five of the top 10 places but missed out on the team award.

Jonathan Kelly of Christ the King was first home while team-mate Chris McEvoy was eighth.

Heasandford had three in top ten with Shane Holding (second), Richard Alderson (sixth) and Jordan Blackburne (ninth) to secure third place in the team competition.

But it was Rose Hill who took the team award thanks to a clutch of runners all coming in together just outside the top 10.

Craig Spark was third for Padiham Green, while a fine run by Bradley Hartley help Worsthorne secure second place.

Michael Marsden of St Peters finished in fifth place with Michael Mitchell, of Cliviger, finishing in seventh place which help guide the school to second place in the small school award.

Burnley Wood won the small school prize with St Joseph's in third place.
