ONE of Preston's most notorious estates looks set to house a new community facility which will bring benefits to hundreds of residents.

Preston Borough Council have decided to hand over an unused and empty property on the town's Callon estate to a new community organisation -- Callon Care.

The organisation is drawn from members of the Callon Action Group Residents' Association, representatives from local primary schools, the RC parish of St Teresa's and the C of E parish of the Risen Lord.

Callon Care will move in to the property on Waldon Street after councillors agreed to transfer the disused house over to the organisation, who will rent it from the council.

Councillor Ken Cole, Preston's cabinet member for housing and direct services, said he welcomed the move. He said: "We are very keen to support Callon Care. They are expanding their facilities and we want to help.

"This empty property is in an excellent location and will enable Callon Care to improve its range of services to local people."

He added: "We are committed to working with Callon Care, tenants and the police to make a difference on the Callon estate."

Sarah Reilly-Evans, project co-ordinator for Callon Care said the group was grateful to the council for its help.

She added: "We are an ever-growing organisation and this property is absolutely ideal for us.

"It is a great boost as we can now provide better facilities for the people on Callon estate."
