MORECAMBE'S own metric martyr is vowing to fight on despite a guilty verdict against a butcher in Sunderland who sold in pounds and ounces.
John Fretwell of Fretwell's butcher's, Bare says he believes he will be prosecuted for his refusal to sell in kilogrammes.
But, with support from customers and more than 1,000 names on his petition, Mr Fretwell says he has no intention of changing his scales.
He said: "In my view its a case of Germany making the laws, Britain following them and places like France, Spain and Greece not even knowing what they are.
"I've had customers coming in all week asking me if I am going to change and the answer is no.
"If somebody comes in and asks for something in grammes I can convert it, I don't have a problem with that, but it happen's very rarely. We're talking about two in every thousand.
"Anybody who wants to show their support can pop along to the shop and sign it. The biggest name to have signed it so far is Cyril Smith, and you can't get much bigger than that!"
