LANCASTER and District YMCA could be on the move to new premises as they try to strengthen their services. The organisation -- founded in 1879 -- wants to buy the Pye's building on Damside/Fleet Square, and is planning a major fundraising drive to raise cash.

"It's a very exciting time for the organisation," explains general secretary Phil McGrath: "and offers us the opportunity to work closely with the community and other agencies in meeting real needs. We have the massive task now of raising the cash and making sure that we do not miss the opportunity."

As well as providing its existing services, including its 'not for profit' fitness centre housed at the existing headquarters on China Street, the only one in the city, the YMCA also hope to develop new services. This could include the long planned venue for young people with an alcohol free bar, stage and dance areas. The fundraising drive is to be launched in this year's YMCA week, and organisers hope to attract funding from members of the public and local businesses.

Mr McGrath added: "We already have a number of members who have signed up to help with the fundraising and would urge local businesses and individuals to dig deep and help us achieve this goal for the people of Lancaster."
