MORECAMBE is set to become a major player in the world of petanque.

The resort's Regent Park has secured backing from the City Council to become one of the country's leading centres for the continental bowls game.

The development with Morecambe Bay Petanque Club will greatly enhance the existing park facilities, turning it into one of the largest club facilities in the country, and enabling it to host a number of events this summer.

The venue has recently been confirmed as the host for a four-way home international tournament next summer.

When the project is completed the club will be hosting an open gala charity day to attract new members. Schools in Salford and petanque clubs across the North West have already requested the use of the park's facilities in order to host coaching development sessions. The Morecambe Bay Petanque Club Honorary President, Alan Dean, said: "The club is extremely grateful for the support of the City Council. We are confident that this support and the events listed above will lead to many more tournaments, which will attract a number of visitors to the area throughout the coming and future season."

Commenting on the facility, Cllr Debbie Lee, chairman of Leisure and Museums Sub-Committee said: "This is great news for Morecambe and petanque enthusiasts. It is wonderful to see Morecambe leading the way and I hope that by having such wonderful facilities in the district it will serve to encourage many more people to take up this increasingly popular pastime."
