A SHOCKED and frightened pub landlady woke up in the early hours to find one of her regular customers in her bedroom.

Burnley Crown Court heard how the plucky victim pushed Philip Speak out of the premises - after her young daughter heard him say he had not wanted to hit her mother, only 'rob' her.

Speak, who has no previous convictions, could face about two years in jail and was bailed until 18 May, for the court to find out the woman's views on what happened.

He was told by Judge Raymond Bennett that all options were open to the court and the starting point was prison.

The defendant, 36, of Holgate Street, Great Harwood, had earlier admitted burglary and been committed for sentence by the Hyndburn magistrates.

Kendal Lindley, prosecuting, said the landlady of the Walmlsey Arms, Great Harwood, had gone out for the evening and went to bed in the early hours after locking up. She and her 13-year-old daughter were both in the pub.

Speak had been in the pub drinking that night.

At about 3.30am, she was awoken by a man's voice in her bedroom and, shocked and frightened, used very strong language towards him.

The commotion woke her daughter up and the landlady managed to push the defendant out of the pub.

Mr Lindley said both mother and daughter were very upset and the daughter heard Speak say he wasn't going to hit her mother, only rob her.

Speak was later arrested and told police he had climbed through the window in the hope of finding money to steal.

Roger Baldwin, defending, said the offence was totally bizarre and no doubt committed because of the amount of alcohol Speak had drunk. The defendant had been out all day drinking and had had about 10 pints of lager and about five Jack Daniels.
