I AM constantly reading letters of complaint about all the litter and grot spots in the area.

I do agree wholeheartedly and it can sorted out as they have done in New York and Thailand.

In November we had a short stay in New York and was amazed at how people dumped their litter and cleared their tables in the fast food chain cafes.

Apparently the Government have done a campaign to clear the streets of litter and have plenty of road sweepers and police presence on the streets and it is working.

I don't know what the penalties are but they have got sick of it all, toughened up and it works.

In February we had a short stay in Singapore. Chewing gum is banned full stop. Also, litter. If tourists so much as drop a toffee paper they are fined on the spot.

Thai people are punished by having to put on the uniform and and sweep the streets with the brooms. The roads and areas can be very dry and dusty. The police do not wear uniforms and are always on the lookout to catch people out. It will boost their economy and it certainly works. No-one wants to go into a Thai jail so they conform to the rules. I know there is a darker side with all the girls etc but as regards litter it is working even in Bangkok and other parts. Some British people need to be re-educated. Adults as well as children and we need to get tougher with the laws instead of the soft touch all the time.
