FYLDE schools are to get a new caretaker -- in the sky!
Lancashire Constabulary's Air Support Unit is launching Operation Caretaker which will soon see the force's helicopter patrolling the skies above schools across the county.
The operation is taking off in an attempt to combat the growing numbers of vandalism and arson attacks on schools.
Intelligence from all six county police divisions has already been given to the Air Support Unit about those schools which are regular targets. Now, when the helicopter is already airborne on an operational mission, the crew will also fly over schools in the area.
Sgt John Kirkwood said: "Operation Caretaker will give divisional officers an extra set of eyes, particularly when the schools are empty.
"Officers attempting to tackle the problem have gathered information and this shows that acts of vandalism, criminal damage and arson tend to occur during the school holidays and in the evening -- particularly so in the summer with the lighter nights.
"The helicopter will be able to provide support by keeping a watchful eye over schools that are potential targets."
Posters will be displayed in schools, which it is hoped will act as a warning to potential offenders.
