I WRITE following the article on Blackpool Zoo (Citizen, April 5). I was surprised to see the photograph of Tourism Minister Janet Anderson feeding the ring tailed lemur. Surely this is in breach of MAFF's guidelines and makes a mockery of the zoo's attempts to suggest that they are adhering to them. Given that the zoo is urging the public not to feed the animals, Ms Anderson's actions are contradictory and confusing -- obviously the photo opportunity was more important than tackling the foot and mouth outbreak.
I would suggest that Citizen readers visit CAPS website before deciding whether Blackpool Zoo is doing all it can to prevent the spread of this terrible disease -- the photographs there also show the MAFF guidelines being breached at the zoo. Once again it would appear that this tourist attraction is more concerned with admission fees than animal welfare -- hardly surprising given its disgraceful track record.
