A BLACKBURN man agreed to sell drugs in a local nightclub, in the hope of making some money, a court was told.

But David Coulthard was caught in possession of ecstasy and amphetamine tablets and jailed for two years.

The 21-year-old of Cavendish Place, Blackburn, had earlier pleaded guilty to two charges of drug possession with intent to supply, one of simple possession and one of supplying tablets.

Mr John Bailey, prosecuting at Preston Crown Court, said police went to the Utopia nightclub. It seemed there had been a random search and that Coulthard had been detained by staff.

The defendant had a bag of 35 brown tablets and another bag containing broken tablets, plus an amount of white powder.

Coulthard later told police he had been picked out in a random drugs search. One of the bags was to be passed to someone else.

Mr Martin Hackett, defending, said his client had got involved through friends.

"At the time he was short of money. He agreed to sell these drugs in the nightclub and he hoped to make perhaps a hundred pounds.

"He knew he was breaking the law, but did not understand the very serious view the court would take of offences involving ecstasy.

"He was at the very bottom end of the scale, as far as the drug ladder is concerned."

Judge Edward Slinger told Coulthard: "It may be you didn't realise how seriously the courts deal with people who deal in Class A drugs, you certainly do now."
