A SCULPTOR is hoping to get a roar of approval when her latest exhibition comes to town.

Marjan Wouda brings her collection of bronze sculptures called "Beastly" to Blackburn Museum and Gallery from tomorrow until June 16. The exhibition features 30 pieces as well as 12 drawings, including street dogs, farm animals, ravens and animals from nursery rhymes.

This is her largest exhibition to date and follows others in London and Amsterdam. She has also been commissioned to create art in Preston, Lancaster, Ashton-under-Lyne, Newcastle, London Docklands and the British Consulate in Hong Kong.

Marjan, who lives in Darwen with her husband and two sons, said: "This exhibition contains some early pieces of work, including my first animal sculpture of major significance. It was inspired by street dogs, witnessed in both Manchester and London when I was at art college and encouraged me to settle on animals as my main subject, while always looking for the human aspect of their behaviour. Another piece has two black ravens, from Norse myth, perched on a bar -- obviously in conversation. They have the power of knowing and ability to pass on selected information, from intelligence gathered as to what is going on in the world.

"The work is at shoulder height and one can position oneself between the ravens to get the full impact.

"Some find this piece menacing while others humorous; certainly the work demands a reaction."
