CAMPAIGNERS fighting plans for an open cast mine on Heald Moor above Burnley, Bacup and Todmorden will go ahead with a protest march between the towns tomorrow despite foot and mouth fears.
Cliviger Parish Council which has been at the forefront of opposition to an application by Wakefield mining company Cobex Ltd to extract 242,000 tonnes of coal from the moor, says it cannot support the march because of the foot and mouth crisis.
But organisers of the No Moor Mines march from the Ram Inn Cliviger to Todmorden and Bacup say walkers will stick to roads and walk through disinfection pools on the way.
Parish council chairman Tony Harrison said: Although the council does not like the idea of people walking through countryside at this time, I can see no objection in people from Cliviger turning up at the Ram Inn car park to sign the petition."
Campaigners will be at the pub at 9.30am.
The Cobex planning application is due to be considered by Lancashire County Council's development control committee on April 19.
