A 'VANDAL-proof' primary school was officially opened last Thursday -- 17 months after pupils and staff moved in. Tyldesley Primary School in Ennerdale Road, home for 300 children, was built in under eight months at a cost of just over £1million and opened "unofficially" in November 1999 when pupils transferred from the town centre County Primary School in Elliott Street.

Long serving chairman of governors and school supporter Tyldesley East ward Councillor Brian Wilson, Wigan Council's cabinet member with responsibility for lifelong learning, declared the school open.

The ceremony attracted Mayor and Mayoress Cllr Mrs Joan Hurst and her daughter Kath Taylor, and Wigan's Director of Education Bob Clark. TPS is the first complete school designed for Wigan's education department for many years.

Head teacher Viv Burrow said: "It's a pleasure to teach here."
