DETECTIVES are hunting a hit-and-run motorist who left a Hindley woman lying in the road with a fractured jaw after a collision.

Waitress Michelle Carey, aged 18, of Derwent Road, was struck by a small white hatchback-style car and thrown over its bonnet as she crossed Library Street in Wigan Town Centre on Saturday April 7.

She was taken to Wigan Infirmary with severe facial cuts and bruises, but transferred to the Manchester Royal Infirmary for tests.

Police said the car appeared to have mounted the kerb when the collision occurred at 2.30am.

And today police appealed for witnesses as Michelle recovered at home with her parents.

Police described the car as a small white or possibly light coloured hatchback. A unique centrally-mounted front windscreen wiper was left at the scene.

Officers at Wigan Traffic Unit said the car must have been damaged but were unsure of the scale.

They appealed for witnesses to the collision or anyone who knows the owner of such a car which has been involved in an accident to get in touch.

Police do not have a description of the motorist.

Anyone with information should contact Wigan Police Traffic unit on 0161 856 7072 or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
