HAVING read the letter (March 30) from Bury's top doctors, my first thought was: wasn't it ever thus with some consultants. They never wanted the NHS in 1948 because it interfered with their lucrative private practice.

It seems to me that the culture needs changing. Are they there to heal the sick or to make money?

As usual, they apologise, but then blame the Government. In my opinion, the NHS is like a great ship that needs to be fuelled and maintained properly: there was not a word about the lack of resources between 1979 and 1997.

I am glad that the Bury Health Care NHS Trust and Bury and Rochdale Health Authority gave such a spirited reply to this politically-motivated letter.

It is easy to see that an election is approaching. Where was such a letter in 1992 and 1997 when the NHS was in difficulties?
