A BURY man suffered horrific injuries when he was dragged along the track by a Metrolink tram.

Dean Hindle was rushed to Bury General Hospital on Friday night (April 6) after the accident at the Metrolink's Radcliffe station. He was treated for a serious head wound and five fractures to his pelvis. His condition is currently described as comfortable.

Tram chiefs have now launched a major investigation and are scanning CCTV footage to establish how the 22-year-old from Windermere Drive fell from the platform.

According to initial police reports, Dean and a friend were waiting on the Manchester bound platform at 11.20pm on Friday. At some point, Dean fell into the track before he was dragged a number of yards by a passing, empty tram.

The screams of Dean's friend are believed to have alerted the driver of the tram who brought the slow moving vehicle to stop.

A spokeswoman for Metrolink confirmed that an investigation by the police and their own transport security bosses was under way.

She said: "CCTV footage is available to assist this investigation. The tram involved in the accident was empty and was returning to the depot. It would not have stopped at the Radcliffe station.

"The inquiry will need to establish whether Mr Hindle had fallen on to the track before it reached the station or as it passed."
