PAUL Terzis is calling for the Rugby League to take urgent action over the game's Alliance competition.

Twice this season Leigh's reserves have had home games postponed because opposition teams have been unable to raise a team.

"Rochdale were the first to cry off and last week Batley pulled out on the morning of the game saying they could only field eight men," says the Leigh coach.

"It's a crazy situation where you have players losing patience because they want to play and we can't give them a fixture.

"Instead of fining clubs, the RFL should be coming up with something that fixes the problem. They are the policy-makers, the clubs look to them for guidance. But where is it?

"Maybe using the Alliance as an Under 21s competition has passed its use by date. Perhaps we should be looking a reverting back to an open age comp.

"That's something I would investigate with the setting up an additional level below the Academy age group. An Under 15/16s competition run by the pro clubs would feed they Academy sides and in turn players would start to filter through to reserve grade and then top grade. It would allow clubs to grow from the bottom and provide solid foundations for years to come.

"What we should be striving to achieve is to give these young players the opportunity to play rugby league. By constantly calling off Alliance games because other clubs haven't got the right foundations in place, we are denying kids the chance to play the game at a good standard.

"The clubs should be pressing the RFL to look at the whole issue of Alliance rugby rather than adopt the ostrich stance and bury their heads in the sand."
