LEIGH Avenue sealed a place in the Redwaters Coronation Cup Final with a Wednesday night last four eliminator 2-0 triumph over AFC Limelight.

As would be expected in a semi-final both sides were timid and wary of each other in the early stages but gradually Avenue began to get the upper hand.

Karl Bretherton went close from a corner and Limelight keeper Dave Renshaw pulled off a couple of memorable saves. The clash was well contested with no need for any sign of yellow cards as referee Ronnie Drake was right on top of his game.

The vital breakthrough came 10 minutes after the interval when Paul Banks headed in from a corner. With Steve Ackers controlling the game in midfield a second goal looked inevitable and it came on 80 minutes as Craig Faulkner raced through to finish.

The Avenue lads dedicated the win to manager Kev Johnson who had suffered a family bereavement during the week.

Defending champions Higher Folds regained the Division One top spot from Royal Oak last week and maintained that one point lead with three games in hand with a 5-0 thumping home win over Courts A on Wednesday.

Goals came from Mick Blakeley (2), Phil Aldred and two own goals from Martin Gerrard and Dave Dooley. Folds are still gunning on four fronts - top in the league table, in the final of the Redwaters and in the semis of the Davenport and Carl Brown Memorials Trophies. What a 'quadruple' that could be!

Royal Oak can only keep winning and that they did with two goals from Jason Huyton sealing a 2-0 victory over Union Arms.

In Division Two, Atherton C&N stayed on course for the title with Jonathan Woods, Ryan Shaw and Paul Doolan earning a 3-1 away win at Asda Golborne. Hag Fold WMC went down 4-3 at home to Fir Tree Rangers, the home side's goals coming from Austin Smith, Phil Green and John Barker and for the winners Peter Mitchell, Phil Buxton, Roger Bond and a Phil Green own goal.
