FURIOUS community leaders are building a team to kick out soccer hooligans.
A series of attacks on isolated sports grounds has brought a call-to-arms from borough councillors who have been incensed by mindless vandalism.
Hindsford councillor Graham Lingings and his Atherton colleague Cllr Sue Loudon have pledged their support to stamp out a problem highlighted by the plight of Atherton Collieries.
The Colls' Alder House clubhouse has been blitzed in a series of raids which has devastated loyal members of the proud old amateur club.
Now the duo are determined to do all in their power to oust the yobs and are urging volunteers to help the cause.
Cllr Lingings said: "The club is being targeted by young vandals who are using it as a drinking venue then their meetings progress with acts of destruction.
"The club has been in existence since the early 1900s and to see it being wrecked like this is absolutely abhorrent. It would be of no use at all talking to the yobs responsible because they obviously have no moral fibre or any sense of pride in the community at all.
"My view is that the parents of these idiots should bear responsibility for the actions of their offspring and instead of wondering where there children are and what they are up to should get a grip and control their behaviour.
"Both Cllr Loudon and myself will do all we can to help as Hindsford and Atherton twin ward representatives but we also need the help of local residents to rid this annoying element."
A plea has gone out from the club for help from local tradesmen and companies who would volunteer their help to assist in repairing the damage and maybe upping security.
Cllr Lingings added: "Club supporters are grateful for police backing and anyone who would like to help, including young people who are disgusted by what is going on, can ring me on 01942 891656 and messages will be passed to the club committee."
Atherton Collieries chairman Steve Payne appreciates the councillors' concern.
Mr Payne said: "I know other sporting clubs who are in isolated position are being affected as well as us. It's a pity those responsible don't divert their energies in to something more positive.
"We are glad Cllr Lingings and Loudon are backing us and already it seems we will benefit because we understand if we join Wigan Sports Council our rates will be halved!"
