LEIGH RMI have rejected an 'insulting' off of £30,000 from Nationwide Conference rivals Morecambe for top scorer Steve Jones.

The flying winger finished the season as the Conference top scorer with 19 and on Wednesday scored the third goal for England's semi-professional team in a 3-0 win against the Highland League in Inverness.

Jones has scored more goals than Justin Jackson who Morecambe sold to Rushden for £180,000.

But the 24-year-old who signed from Chorley two years ago is also attracting interest from another Conference club, Boston United, as well as a couple of Football League clubs.

Manager Steve Waywell says: "Steve is a £100,000-plus player and we don't want to lose him. An offer of £30,000 is an insult.

"The lad has the ability to do well in the Football League but there is no way we are going to let him go on the cheap.

Waywell, who this week agreed a new four year contract to stay at Hilton Park, is looking to make several signings before the start of next season.

Four players have been released from the squad - strikers Mick Morrell and Andy Mason, winger Dave Gardner and utility player Ged Murphy.
