WITH regard to the affair of the Prescott punch, you asserted in your editorial (LET, May 17) that he was subjected to a "cowardly and provocative attack."

Oh, come on! For heaven's sake it was an egg thrown -- not a bullet from a gun!

Daily, in this lawless country, people are being mugged and robbed. Nightly, in our town and city centres, drunken yobs are punching one another -- and everybody else for that matter.

John Prescott was not subjected to a horrendous beating like the Oldham pensioner and, let's not forget the 16-year-old girl stabbed to death in broad daylight in Birmingham city centre.

The Prescott affair should be treated with a sense of proportion.
