BLACKBURN Harriers topped 200 points when winning convincingly their second match of this year's McDonalds Young Athletes League.

The win puts them in contention for promotion to the Premier Division -- but with three matches left there is still plenty of hard work to be done.

The field events proved to be the main thrust for the home side in this fixture at Witton Park.

Gerard McNulty won the hammer and discus A as did Neil Dewhurst the B string for the under 17s with Greg Taylor winning the B in the under 15s.

James Exton and Phil Larner, both new to the club, won the shot for the under 17s as did Gavin Southworth with 10m 89 for the A string in the under 15 backed up by Chris Burton who won his category.

Ben Smithson, fresh from his schools trials win, won the B discus in 22.63.

Back in the team David Green won the B pole vault, A high jump in a close tie for first with a personal best 1.70m, while excellent but dependable Andy Lake won the A pole, B high jump and A 100H.

Gerard McNulty finished off with a win in the 100H B event.

The under 13s could not be pushed out when trials winner Alex Unsworth, as well as winning the B 100m, won the long jump in a personal best of 4.16 backed by Liam Holden with 3.92 in the B. In the shot Lloyd Bury who won the 100m, also took the shot in 6.97.

Stefan Holden won the B shot with 6.09.

In the sprints all started well with Jordan Nevins winning, despite a hand injury, the 200m for the under 13s as well as the B 800m with captain Michael Floyd winning the same race for the under 17s.

John Fenton, fresh to the team from Blackburn Rugby Club, ran well in support in the senior sprints.

James Dunn was pipped in both sprints by Trafford's man of the match Nedum Onvoha whilst Matt Wood came down in distance to win the A 400m in a personal best of 56seconds and the B 100m. Both combined with McLean and Adam Smith to win the 4 x 400m for Blackburn.

Danny McLean following his excellent Lancashire Championships, recorded a PB in the 1500m and won the A 800m in the under 15s race following Simon Chadwick's win in the under 13s 1500m just missing an AAA standard. Sean Harrington and Daniel Pacynko covered the distance events for the senior age group with distinction picking up valuable points which sealed a convincing win. The scores were: Blackburn 208, Skyrac 163, Trafford 159, Oldham 62.
